Entry and aggregation at a Central African bai reveal social patterns in the elusive forest elephant Loxodonta cyclotis

چکیده

Social relationships are shaped by ecological conditions, giving rise to diverse societies even among related species. Among elephants, females exhibit close, often familial bonds with some degree of philopatry and fission–fusion dynamics. Forest elephant sociality is the least studied species, their ecology differs from that savannah Asian elephants. We use over 15 years data an individually identified population using Dzanga Bai forest clearing in Central African Republic characterize social patterns adult female elephants two contexts, when entering within clearing. properties were nonrandom highly stable study period both contexts. Composition aggregations indicated considerable mixing females, while association groups bai together limited composition, likely representing core units. The co-entry set exhibited distinct communities not apparent co-occurrence set. In contrast network centrality age negatively correlated, suggesting a muted or absent matriarch hub role at broader level than family Temporal community analyses contexts may represent processes, former latter driven shared resource use. Our results point potentially need for families fission into small units because competition highlight importance aggregation context interpreting indices.

Quantifying forest elephant social structure in Central African bai environments

Relatively little is known of social dynamics in forest elephants (Loxodonta africana cyclotis), although the fission-fusion model of sociality known in savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana africana) is used as a template. Until fission-fusion sociality or an alternative model is demonstrated, our understanding of how elephants use their environment remains incomplete. To date, there have bee...

Loxodonta africana – African Elephant

Taxonomic notes: Preliminary genetic evidence suggests that there may be at least two species of African Elephant, namely the Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) (Roca et al. 2001, 2005). A third species, the West African Elephant, has also been postulated. The IUCN SSC African Elephant Specialist Group currently accepts the single species proposa...

The skull and mandible of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

In the present study the bones of the skull, excluding the hyoid apparatus, are described. All the bones are aerated by sinuses. In the occipital bone the squamous part is aerated from the sinus of the parietal bone, the lateral part is aerated from the tympanic bulla and the basal part from the sinus of the basisphenoid bone. Condylar foramens and hypoglossal canals are absent. A small interpa...
